The Penis

Penis was the first to generate dispute among authorities and within the community. Briefly after its emergence in late September 2016, Sint-Gillis Council, from Facebook, announced the decision to remove the piece. They acknowledged the favourableness of the wall's location for a mural and that an artist will be sought to paint the wall consulting the residents (Haigh 2016, MB 2016). While some residents found it shocking and agreed upon its removal, others thought that it gives the city/neighbourhood a distinctive identity. A Facebook group with over four thousand likes, Touche pas à mon zizi, and a petition, Sauvez le penis /Red de penis, on avaaz.org were created. The petition read: "Because every form of creativity in our city is important, we are calling for the penis mural to stay. As a counterweight to all of the ready-made 'tourist street art' imposed upon Brussels residents” (Boyle 2016).
