The Murals
What is distinct about them?
In September 2016, a 6-feet tall penis mural saluted Brusselians from Sint-Gillis neighbourhood. A little later, it was accompanied by other explicit and violent murals that soon prevailed throughout the city. A close-up depiction of coitus graced a wall on Rue des Poissonnier, a female touching herself overlooked the Place Stephanie overnight. An anus (covering a Zanussi ad) and a moment of birth murals also surrounded two sides of a building near the canal.
Following these explicit ones, two new violent pieces, both inspired by 17th-century artworks, appeared and gained publicity in a short time. One was depicting the beheading of a child resembling, "The Sacrifice of Isaac" by the Italian painter Caravaggio, and the other one was reminiscent of “The Corpses of the De Witt Brothers” by Dutch artist Jan de Baen (Casert 2017).
